How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session in Spring, TX
You just found out you're expecting (or maybe baby is already here and you're in that beautiful, exhausted haze), and someone told you to book your newborn photographer early. So here you are.
Hi — I'm so glad you're here!
I'm April, and I've been photographing newborns over the past seven years. I've photographed babies who slept like little angels the entire session and babies who had... other plans. I've learned that preparation makes all the difference — not just for getting beautiful images, but for making sure you actually enjoy the experience.
So let me walk you through everything.
When Should You Book — And When Should You Schedule the Session?
Book your photographer during your second trimester if you can. Newborn photographers (good ones, anyway) fill up fast, and you want to be on the calendar before baby arrives — not scrambling during those first foggy weeks.
For the actual session, the sweet spot is 5–14 days old. This is when babies are sleepiest, still curly and snuggly, and most cooperative for those precious naturally-posed images. After two weeks, they start waking up more and becoming a little more opinionated about being moved around (understandably so). We'll pencil in a tentative date and adjust once baby arrives.
What to Do the Day of the Session
This is the biggest thing I tell every client: feed baby right before you come, or right when you arrive. A full baby is a sleepy baby, and a sleepy baby is a cooperative baby.
(Psst — planning an in-home session instead? The tips are a little different... think "hide the laundry pile" and "yes, your dog can absolutely be in the photos." I've got a whole separate post coming for that one. Stay tuned!)
A few other day-of tips:
• Keep baby in a onesie (not a full outfit) on the way over so they stay warm and don't get overstimulated from getting dressed twice.
• If you can, have your baby in a white diaper with no branding - the Coterie brand is a popular choice, as well as Honest and Hello Bello (Pure). You can often find these at HEB, Target or Amazon.
• Arrive a little early if you can, but there's no rush here — this is your time.
• Eat something yourself. I know that sounds obvious, but tired new parents forget. You matter too.
• Bring whatever soothes your baby — a pacifier, a specific blanket, a swaddle they love. Anything that feels like home.
What to Wear (For You!)
Simple and neutral is always a good call — creams, tans, dusty blush, soft whites. Avoid big logos or super busy patterns. The goal is for your family to be the focus, not the clothing.
And please hear me when I say this: you are enough. You don't need to have "bounced back" or look any particular way. Some of my favorite images when photographing in-home are mamas in their robes, disheveled and glowing, looking at their baby like they hung the moon. That's the real thing. That's what you'll want to remember.
What Happens During the Session?
Newborn sessions are slow and gentle — typically 1-2 hours. We're not rushing. We'll do naturally-posed newborn images (those sleepy, curled-up shots), some with a special blanket or meaningful items, and then add in any siblings with their baby. We make sure to get mama and baby, dad and baby, family portraits with you and your partner, even grandparents if you'd like.
No unnatural positions for baby, just lovely shots of how they are in this moment with the family that loves them.
We feed when baby needs to feed. We pause when baby needs to be held. We follow their lead completely. My studio is kept warm so babies stay comfortable, and I'll guide you through every single pose so you feel supported and comfortable (you won't be standing there wondering what to do with your hands lol).
One More Thing...
The newborn stage is so short. I know everyone says that and it sounds like a cliché, but I've watched it from the other side of the camera for seven years — it genuinely is. The way they fit perfectly in the crook of your arm, the tiny fist wrapped around your finger, the way they smell. These sessions exist to hold onto that.
You don't have to have it all together. You just have to show up, and I'll take care of the rest.
